The beans go through a thorough cleaning process and are roasted at high temperatures (over 200°C). These steps guarantee that Kopi Luwak is completely safe to enjoy and is Halal Certified by Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI).
What does Kopi Luwak taste like?
Well, it’s definitely not bitter and has an incredible aroma. The flavor is quite complex, featuring smooth, earthy, and sweet notes, with a delightful hint of chocolate. Keep in mind that the tasting notes can vary a bit from batch to batch. This is because each batch comes from different locations, and the luwak enjoys a variety of fruits, which can influence the coffee’s flavor profile. The roasting level also plays a role in the tasting notes.

What Is Luwak Coffee?
Kopi Luwak, also known as Luwak Coffee, is a unique coffee made from Arabica beans that have been digested by the wild luwak, or Asian Palm Civet, found in the mountains of central Aceh in Sumatra. Thanks to the natural fermentation that happens in their digestive system, this coffee boasts a one-of-a-kind flavor that many people adore. The journey starts with the Luwak carefully picking out the finest coffee beans. After they’ve had their fill, the beans are digested and eventually excreted along with their waste. Once collected, the beans are meticulously cleaned, preparing them for the next steps in the brewing process.
However, due to its popularity and limited availability, some people resort to caging luwaks and forcing them to eat coffee cherries, which is absolutely not okay!
This practice is driven by the high price of Luwak Coffee. Not only is this cruel to the animals, but it also results in lower-quality coffee because the civet’s health suffers from an improper diet. The special enzymes in Kopi Luwak are what give it its distinct flavor. If the civet’s diet isn’t right, those enzymes won’t work as they should. At specialtycoffee.id, we ensure that all our civets live healthy, cage-free lives.
So, yes, this coffee comes from beans that have been partially digested by the Indonesian palm civet and then excreted. It might sound a bit gross, but don’t worry! The outer layer of the beans is removed during processing, and the remaining beans are thoroughly cleaned before roasting and reaching your cup. It’s a common misconception that Kopi Luwak is a specific type of coffee; in reality, it’s a processing method. This means the flavor can vary quite a bit depending on where the beans come from and how they’re roasted. Our beans are sourced from Aceh Gayo, Indonesia, the original and finest place to find Wild Kopi Luwak.
